The Boston Tea Party was a memorable moment in American history. It is remembered as a time when the United States took a stand against the British. This was a turning point in American history because it helped the United States become a free country.
On December 16, 1776 three British ships filled with tea arrived in the Boston Harbor. Nearly 7,000 angry locals gathered at the docks. The Sons of Liberty held a meeting to decide what to do with the ships. The boycott was still going on and they wanted to make a stand. They decided to have the ships leave the harbor without any workers receiving pay. They took this proposal to
the Customs House to have the ships released. The Customs House denied it, which angered the locals even more. That night, the Sons of Liberty along with a group of 200 men had a plan. They disguised themselves as Mohawk warriors and boarded the three ships. Dressing as Mohawk warriors was very symbolic. It showed that the Sons of Liberty identified with America as subjects of Britain. With faces blackened, they cracked open and dumped all the tea on the ships into the ocean. It took about three hours to throw the 342 chests of tea into the sea, blackening the sea and igniting a revolution.
